For a cozy A-frame cottage on the eastern shore of the Sakonnet River, Thomas Wheaton designed a new 500+ SF patio composed of manufactured pavers specially coated to resist erosion from salt spray. In contrast to the tiny, older patio it replaced, the new and expanded outdoor space has ample room for dining, sunning and lounging while enjoying glorious sunsets and tranquil, breezy evenings.

A row of ‘Limelight’ hydrangeas was added to reinforce the existing boundary hedge for enhanced privacy and sound mitigation.
The new perennial plantings include a mix of prairie species which will offer blooms from spring through early autumn.
Plantings throughout the property consist of perennial varieties selected not only for their aesthetic qualities, hardiness, and tolerance of drought and salt spray, but also for the support they offer to native pollinator species. The site has been designated a pollinator habitat. For more information, visit the Xerces Society website.
The new front hardscaping features a paver walkway framing an inset area composed of local beach stones. New plantings include boxwoods which will form a low hedge to frame the new path.
A recent addition to the garden is this contemplative space, a circle of crushed shell with a peace bell standing at its center
